Quietly exiting the building, Lora cautiously stepped into the parking lot and followed its length to the fenced-off area where the dumpsters were, far out of sight from most of the sleeping tenants. Then, using the light of a glaring fluorescent floodlight overhead, Lora stuck the vehicle’s tube in her mouth and began to blow. It took several tries, and felt like she was about to lose her breath entirely, but on the 5th blow, her efforts had caused the toy-sized object to form into a massive, fully functional, yet undeniably rubber-surfaced spaceship. It had the form of a simplistic, almost cartoony dragon, and its cockpit lay along the front segment of its fuselage, just behind the head. Climbing in from the low tilt that allowed her access, Lora took a seat in one of the chairs and strapped on a safety belt, finding that everything from the walls to the seats was made of a soft material that likened to some kind of gel coated in vinyl.

Despite this peculiarity, a fully functioning flight computer deck was before her, with a screen near the center showing English text reading off a diagnostics check. It ended at a prompt reading: “Auto-Launch sequence ready. Execute?” And she reached out and tapped the “Yes” option.

A large bubble of vinyl sealed the top like a sliding glass windshield, air hissed into the cockpit to pressurize it, then with a burst of what sounded like rocket engines firing, the ship launched into the air, straight towards the stars and well away from the moon.

Lora was stunned by what this ship used for flight, as she recognized the scene of warping star fields as the use of a hyperspace drive, meaning that no matter how far away this planet was, it would be mere seconds for the ship to get there. And indeed, the warp field came to an end as the ship slowed to reveal a massive, Earth-like planet, with an indigo-shaded ocean, large continents with a massive array of colors, and oddly-hued, almost psychedelic clouds.

But what caught Lora even more unawares was the sight of its moon. Although about the size of Earth’s moon, if the general relative distance was correct, this moon was in the shape of a humanoid. It was hard to tell from this distance. But that didn’t matter, because Lora could feel a presence slowly building around her, while a voice, strong, deep, masculine and powerful, spoke in her mind.

“Welcome, child. We have been waiting for you to arrive.”

And with that, the ship descended on the planet at about the same speed an aircraft would when approaching a runway. Lora wondered how the friction of atmospheric re-entry would hold up against the strange squeaky material this craft was made of, but she simply sat back and hoped for the best.

Eventually, the dragon starship landed on a small glowing platform with a strange, crosshair-like shape. A large house, maybe even a mansion, loomed close nearby. As the rubber canopy opened up, Lora unstrapped and climbed out, remembering to put on her respirator at the last minute.

The spectacle of this planet was a sight to behold. Lora had seen lots of fantasy worlds in her various media, from Wonderland, to Myst Island, Slumberland, and the many imagined places in Codename Kids Next Door, but to actually see an alien world, equally surreal as those, with humanoid beings on it? NASA would pay millions to see this kind of thing.

The landscape was a bizarre mishmash of organic life twisted in surreal ways, almost making something out of a piece from Dr. Seuss. Only a few villages on the horizon stood out, leaving most of the surface untouched. In the sky, flocks of huge, jellyfish-like hot-air balloons drifted miles away from Lora’s position, accompanied by geometric structures which she assumed were some kind of hover platform to support buildings, as that’s what she just barely saw supported on those platforms.

Footsteps approaching from behind broke her sense of amazement. Lora turned about, and saw Lois Prisma standing right before her. In her life-size stature, Lora was surprised as to how young this person looked, almost as old as she was, maybe give or take a few years, but the voice sounded older, motherly.

“He...Hello, Miss Prisma,” Lora stammered, muffled slightly through the mask.

Lois prepared for the next gesture, and reached out her right hand for an almost predicted handshake. Lora saw the cue, and took it, albeit somewhat shyly.

“Welcome, Lora. Welcome to Draemona,” the glowing woman warmly began.

Before Lora could answer, the scientist suggested, “Come, we can talk in my laboratory.”

The two of them entered the enormous house through a rear door, across a wide, curving hallway which Lora had no time to study, and into an elevator that quickly whisked them to a sterile white room. Lois immediately moved to a panel set in the wall and turned it to “Earth atmosphere”. Immediately, the air in the room changed, to which Lora graciously removed the small mask.

“Um, how am I breathing? I thought you said this planet doesn’t fit my respiratory...uh, my lungs.”

“I did, but I have equipped my lab with environment controls to adjust different gasses when certain experiments are necessary. But that isn’t important. What is important, I can assume, is how your body has adapted to that suit.”

“Yeah, I agree. Feels like I transformed on the inside and outside.”

“Well, I can’t close my project without concrete results, now can I? Please, step into the scanner, if you may.”

Lora followed Ms. Prisma’s pointing finger to a cylindrical stall set in one corner. Finding a large button, which Lois asked her to push, the pod sealed itself and began a complex scanning sequence. Results appeared on a screen nearby, which Lois checked off on an encryptium data tablet in her arms.

“Let’s see...Steady vital signs, no change in metabolism, neural activity functional, sight unchanged, respiratory...fairly normal, requires oxygen and nitrogen to function; dermal strata...hmmm, that’s interesting. Didn’t expect that kind of result, but still impressive.”

She opened a separate file called “Suit, Trial 3” and typed in a space reading “Results”, “Suit adaptation to human subject poses no damage to body. Muscular system, skeleton, and internal organs modified into elastic substance suitable for malleability; Metabolic cycle unaffected and stable, subject should be able to live (eat, drink, breathe, exercise, etc.) as any human would, without adverse effects.”

As she finished typing in that entry, the scanner powered down and opened. Lora climbed out and remarked, “Wow, that was some X-ray.”

“I can imagine. Well, if you haven’t figured it out yet, this costume has given you power over manipulating your body’s physical makeup. In other words, you’ve become elastic and very malleable.”

“Yeah, I kind of figured that already. So...”

Lois stopped her guest mid-sentence, and tried to lay all the needed details out in as brief a way as possible before moving to the critical info.

“I realize you’re probably confused and have many questions, but can you permit me to explain a little about this place?”

“Sure, I have time,” Lora shrugged while finding a small stool and sitting down.

Lois turned to a large screen set in one wall, and started a video sequence on it, as she dictated, “You see, I am a scientist who studies humans for their unique quality of requiring chaos to create equilibrium in their lives. We Draemonians – the sacred 5 breeds of Taul, are entirely different.”

 “How so?”

“You’ve heard of the concepts of utopia and paradise, haven’t you?”

“Yes. As a matter of fact, when I got off that ship, I was just thinking about certain fantasy worlds I’ve read about back home.”

“What humans strive to achieve, this ‘utopia’, is regular life for us.”

Lora almost busted out laughing, “Really?”

“It’s true. Everything we ever need is already here, and not once in our history have we ever required weapons as an answer to diplomatic issues,” She paused, bringing up a fact, “And unlike what your H. G. Wells says, there is a system in place that enables us to solve problems when they arise. The Council, and of course, our Maker, Taul, make up that system.”

“So...you actually read a book from Earth? How?”

“I can’t really explain, but reading Earth records is mainly how I learned to speak ‘English’. Anyway, at this era, since around 1700 Earth years ago, we have been driven by curiosity to go farther with our materials and projects, rather than simply remaining complacent like our ancestors did. My curiosity has led to the suit I’ve given you.”

“Hmm...okay, so how does it work? Yeah, it gave me powers, but how did it do that?”

“It’s rather simple, actually. The land around this area is rich in raw materials, and some of those materials can be used to build structures literally from the ground up. I’ve observed that some of them can even spawn living creatures with unique abilities related to their base substances, so I decided to test this by building that costume, using living materials that equate to within latex and bubble gum. You’re the ideal subject for this experiment, because Taul finds your affinity with science fiction media to be the proper criteria for ‘superpowers’.”

“What about this perfume on me?”

“That was something I had a little humor adding in. Let’s just say...if you ever run into any male enemies on Earth, they will be much easier to incapacitate.”

“Huh...” Lora considered that tip, and smirked, “Wow, so I get to be both elastic and a seductress in one?”

 “Perhaps.”

“So, then, what’s this thing you said was causing trouble?”

Lora arrives on Draemona and meets the costume's enigmatic creator, but as any human would expect, has to know a little bit about Draemona itself before trusting this scientist and helping her fix what's gone wrong.
